High Times magazine recently posted an article about a new study that "confirms the safety of CBD, renewing calls from the hemp industry for the FDA to regulate cannabidiol products." For longtime CBD users this comes as no surprise...but research that affirms the medicinal applications of cannabis products helps to both reduce stigma and move us closer to federal legalization.

"A new comprehensive study of more than 1,000 people has confirmed the safety of orally-ingested cannabidiol products and provides data that addresses the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s concerns about the safety of CBD. The two-part study found that daily consumption of CBD across a range of typical retail products and serving sizes is not associated with elevated liver tests, low testosterone levels, or daytime drowsiness.

'The data in this study looks really good; it’s highly significant, and the chances of it being wrong are very, very small,' Dr. Robert Kaufmann, director of research for Validcare and a former professor at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, said in a statement from the U.S. Hemp Roundtable. 'I am very hopeful that this data will allow the FDA to regulate these popular CBD products.'"

When states legalize marijuana, the volume of prescriptions within the drug classes that align with the medical indications for pain, depression, anxiety, sleep, psychosis and seizures significantly decline, the researchers found.”

This article from Benzinga shares the results of two new Israeli cannabis studies on its effects for both cancer and autism. This research is possible largely due to the robust cannabis startup hub, made possible by Israel’s early adoption of cannabis medicine. Read more to learn about the studies, as well as a new educational resource for Israeli patients!

“Israel has been long dominating the cannabis industry in terms of breakthrough research and developing innovative medicinal products to treat the sick. They are light years ahead compared to other countries, and are home to numerous startups that are dedicated to cannabis innovation. Here are some of the latest cannabis news to come out of Israel:

Cannabotech, an Israeli biotech firm, recently released the results of an investigation conducted by physicians at the Hadassah Medical Center… They found a sixfold improvement in the reduction of cancer cells compared to existing treatment…

Most studies focused on using cannabis for treating the symptoms of autism highlight the benefits of CBD…

‘THC was more effective. The main difference was that THC treatment also improved social behavior, not only repetitive compulsive behavior,’ she says…”

Follow the link in our bio to listen to the interview or read the full transcript!“Weedmaps CEO Chris Beals joins Yahoo Finance Live to discuss what's standing in the way of federal cannabis legalization, legal marijuana markets, and whether inflation is also hitting the weed industry.Happening right now as we speak, the House of Representatives is voting on what's called the MORE Act. This would remove marijuana from the list of federally controlled substances. It could pave the way for legalized recreational pot sales across the country. There are some other hurdles the industry faces, however. And this measure is likely to stall in the Senate, even if it does pass the House. Joining me now to discuss the current dynamics is Weedmaps CEO Chris Beals.”

Positive cannabis legislation news this Sunday! 🌿🍃🌱

"The Senate on Thursday unanimously approved a marijuana bill—but not the federal legalization measure that advocates have been eagerly awaiting Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to bring to the floor. Rather, it’s a modest bipartisan piece of legislation that’s simply meant to promote research into marijuana.

The bill—sponsored by Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Brian Schatz (D-HI) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA)—is titled the Cannabidiol and Marihuana Research Expansion Act. It cleared the full chamber unanimously, without debate.

It would streamline the application process for researchers who want to study the plant and to encourage the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to develop cannabis-derived medicines."

Through the legalization of cannabis and increased accessibility, there has been an increasing concern that it could cause in increase in cannabis use and abuse in children. This weeks reading unpacks how this is not the case, and the facts to back it up.

"An alcohol and tobacco industry-backed marijuana policy group released a report on Wednesday that provides an overview of data showing that state-level cannabis legalization has not led to increased youth consumption and offers perspective on prevention methods.

The Coalition for Cannabis Policy, Education, and Regulation (CPEAR) released the analysis, which points to studies that plainly contradict claims often made by prohibitionists that creating regulated cannabis markets would lead more underage people to consume marijuana."

“Cannabis is illegal in most countries. If you try to travel internationally with any amount of cannabis in your possession, you could face serious criminal penalties both at home and abroad,” the Canadian government website states.

This applies even if the person is traveling to or from a place where cannabis has been decriminalized, according to the website. Consequences for traveling with cannabis products includes being denied entry into a country.

'You could be denied entry at your destination country if you have previously used cannabis or any substance prohibited by local laws,' the website states. 'You could also be denied entry to other countries in the future.'"

With legislation changing everyday, there is a greater need now than ever for more cannabis research 🔬🍃

This week's article from Marijuana Moment talks about the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the push for federally funded research, in order to properly inform the states' new legislation.

“Policies around of cannabis products (including whole plant cannabis and cannabis constituent compounds) in the United States (and globally) continue to evolve, and far outpace the knowledge needed to determine the public health impacts of these changes,” the notice says. “Growing numbers of states have loosened restrictions on cannabis, including those on sales and use, by passing medical marijuana laws or by making cannabis legal for adult recreational use, and in increasing numbers, states have done both.”

Examples of potential studies include developing standardized methods of measuring marijuana and its components, enhancing epidemiological research on cannabis use, determining “physical and mental health antecedents” of marijuana use, exploring the reasons people start to consume cannabis and continue to use it for therapeutic purposes and several other health-focused topics."

Frustrated with how cannabis is talked about in the media? So are we!

This week, Ganjapreneur launched their new series "Cannabias" to breakdown the way in which cannabis is talked about in the media and the countless instances of bias woven in. We're excited to read more!

"Cannabis industry reporting by mainstream news is plagued by bias, primarily because most reporters aren’t familiar with the industry, just don’t care, or have preconceived ‘War on Drugs’ notions – inherent biases – that bleed into their reporting. They don’t know the history of why the term “marijuana” was pushed on white Americans in the 1930’s, and may not even be aware of the politically-motivated roots of the Nixon-era Drug War.

...Sure, we all believe that cannabis prohibition and the resulting mass incarceration of this policy is wrong, illegitimate, and unjust; however, it is the job of Cannabias to remain as neutral as possible in our critique and to focus on facts that provably demonstrate flaws and shortcomings in the coverage that we analyze."

Another use case of cannabis as a safer alternative to opiod treatment!

Read about John Hopkin’s professor, Artin Shoukas’, PhD, life-changing experience with cannabis and why he is advocating for more research into cannabis-therapy alternatives to pharmaceuticals.

“Artin (Art) Shoukas, PhD, a Johns Hopkins University professor emeritus, would have never dreamed he’d be using marijuana every night in his retirement years. He melts the medicinal form – mostly cannabidiol (CBD) with just a touch of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – under his tongue before dinner.

It helps him sleep. But not just because of its reported slumber-inducing effects. He takes a full-spectrum, cannabis-based product to calm his legs.

Diagnosed with restless legs syndrome (RLS) in 1991, when the relentless feeling of “ants crawling” inside his legs became intense and life-altering, Shoukas tried everything his doctor at Johns Hopkins suggested. Iron supplements. Quinine. Eventually, he resorted to OxyContin after finding it helped his RLS following an unrelated surgical procedure.

The opioid worked. But the professor of physiology and biomedical engineering knew the drug behind a nationwide health crisis wasn’t a sustainable answer. Then he found Jacquelyn (Jacci) Bainbridge, PharmD, a professor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

Bainbridge, a professor in the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, helps conduct cannabis-related clinical trials on campus and educates students and consumers on the growing need for evidence-based facts.”

Through continued research, we are learning more and more about this amazing plant!

This Sunday reading takes a close look at cannabis studies being done in California. Read about the revolutionary cannabis research studying the medical implications of cannabis for Alzheimer's and inflammation!

"Decades of research on medical cannabis has focused on the compounds THC and CBD in clinical applications. But less is known about the therapeutic properties of cannabinol (CBN). But a new study by scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies indicates that CBN can protect nerve cells from oxidative damage, a major pathway to cell death.

The findings, published online last month by the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine, suggest CBN has the potential for treating age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

'We’ve found that cannabinol protects neurons from oxidative stress and cell death, two of the major contributors to Alzheimer’s,' said study senior author Pamela Maher, a research professor and head of Salk’s Cellular Neurobiology Laboratory."
